How to use Global Competitions
Set-up takes about 5 minutes on your iPhone or Android phone, once. After that, entering a comp takes a few taps.
STEP 1 Put it on your Home Screen
- Go to global-comps.com/app in Safari.
If it opened inside Messages, Facebook or Instagram, tap ••• or the compass icon and choose Open in Safari.
- Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up).
- Scroll down, tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
- From now on, open it from the trophy icon on your Home Screen.
STEP 2 Enter your details
- Fill in your name, email, mobile, date of birth and address, then tap Save and continue.
Use your real details, because promoters check ID before handing over prizes. Your details stay on your phone and nobody else can see them.
STEP 3 Add the Fill button to Safari
- On the "Add your Fill button" screen, tap Copy my Fill button.
- Tap Safari's Share button, then Add Bookmark.
- Change the name to Fill comp, check the location says Favourites, then tap Save.
- Tap the Bookmarks button (the open book), then Favourites, then Edit (bottom right).
- Tap Fill comp. Tap the web address under the name, clear it with the ⓧ, then press and hold and choose Paste. Tap Done.
- Test it: tap Bookmarks (book), then Favourites, then Fill comp. The practice boxes should fill in with your details.
Always run Fill from the Bookmarks button (open book). Typing "Fill" into the address bar gives a "Cannot Run Script" message, because Safari blocks that.
ANDROID Using an Android phone?
- Use Chrome. Open global-comps.com/app, tap ⋮ (top right), then Add to Home screen.
- Enter your details, then tap Copy my Fill button.
- Tap ⋮, then the ☆ star to bookmark the page. Tap Edit in the pop-up (or go to ⋮ → Bookmarks, find it, and tap its ⋮ → Edit).
- Change the name to Fill comp. Clear the URL box, press and hold, choose Paste, then tap back to save.
- To fill a form: tap the address bar, type Fill comp, and tap the ☆ Fill comp suggestion.
Android is the opposite of iPhone: tapping the bookmark in Chrome's Bookmarks list does nothing, so always run it from the address bar. Samsung Internet and other browsers may not run it at all, so use Chrome.
DAILY Entering comps
- Open Global Competitions. The To enter tab lists comps with an entry form, with those closing soonest first. Use Australia / Worldwide at the top to choose which comps you see.
- Tap Enter next comp. The comp opens in a new Safari tab.
- On the entry form, tap Bookmarks (book), then Fill comp. Your details are filled in and outlined in orange.
- Answer any question yourself (like "in 25 words or less"), tick the CAPTCHA and any T&C box outlined in yellow, and check everything. Then tap Submit.
- Switch back to the Global Competitions tab and tap ✓ Entered. Then tap Enter next comp again.
If you see "This entry form is built into the page from another website", tap Open the form on its own page, then tap Fill comp again. Some forms also have a Start button to tap first.
SOCIAL Instagram & Facebook comps
- The Social tab lists comps you enter by following, liking, commenting or tagging friends on a post.
- Each one shows what to do, for example Follow @brand, Like or Tag 2 friends.
- Tap Enter and the post opens in Instagram. Do the steps listed, then come back and tap ✓ Entered.
- To save time tagging, add your friends' @handles in Settings → Friends to tag. Then Copy tags copies the next few names for you, taking turns, so you can paste them into your comment.
Only tag friends who are happy to be tagged.
Good to know
- It never enters for you
- You always tick the CAPTCHA and press Submit yourself. Most comps disqualify automated entries, so this keeps your entries valid.
- Keep a backup
- Safari can clear the app's data if you don't open it for a few weeks. Now and then, go to Settings → Copy backup and paste it into Notes.
- Worldwide comps
- These come from overseas giveaway sites and are listed as open worldwide. Check the rules say Australia is included, and note that some prizes are in US dollars or need an overseas delivery address.
- Changed your details?
- Update them in Settings → Change my details, then set up the Fill button again (Step 3).
- Extra help with forms
- Turn on Settings → Apps → Safari → AutoFill → Use Contact Info, with your own card chosen as "My Info". It helps with forms the Fill button can't reach.
